Leading Hand Diesel Mechanic
Job No:
KCL434
Location:
Cowra and Young
Leading Hand Diesel Mechanic
Cowra or Young, NSW | Agricultural Machinery
Ready to take the next step without giving up the tools?
Kenway & Clark is seeking an experienced mechanic to provide day-to-day leadership within our Cowra or Young Service departments.
This is a working leadership position combining mechanical work with the coordination needed to keep a busy workshop functioning effectively. You’ll still diagnose faults, carry out repairs and work alongside the team, while also organising workloads, monitoring job progress and keeping customers informed.
We expect the position to be broadly divided equally between hands-on mechanical work and workshop coordination, although the balance will shift during busy seasonal periods.
You may already be working as a Leading Hand or Workshop Foreman, or you might be a senior technician ready to step into your first formal leadership position.
What the position involves
You’ll become the central point for the day-to-day flow of work through the Service department. This will include:
-
Planning and allocating workshop and field service work
-
Setting daily priorities and adjusting them as customer needs change
-
Working on agricultural and construction equipment alongside the team
-
Diagnosing faults and assisting others with complex technical problems
-
Tracking the progress of repairs and addressing delays
-
Reviewing technician time, parts usage and job documentation
-
Preparing estimates and recognising when the scope or cost of a repair has changed
-
Keeping customers informed throughout the repair process
-
Coordinating parts requirements with the branch Parts department
-
Checking completed jobs for quality and completeness
-
Guiding apprentices and supporting the development of less-experienced technicians
-
Promoting safe work practices and maintaining an orderly workshop
-
Helping improve labour recovery, productivity and workshop processes
-
Raising operational, customer and staffing concerns with the Branch Manager when required
It’s a practical role for someone who can see the bigger picture while still contributing productive hours in the workshop and field.
What we’re looking for
You’ll need to be a qualified Diesel, Heavy Diesel or Agricultural Mechanic with strong diagnostic and repair experience.
You will also bring:
-
The ability to plan work and manage changing priorities
-
Clear communication with customers, technicians and other departments
-
Sound judgement and confidence making day-to-day decisions
-
An understanding of estimates, labour, parts and job costing
-
Good computer skills and accurate administration
-
A willingness to coach apprentices and share technical knowledge
-
High standards of workmanship and safety
-
A practical and accountable approach to resolving problems
-
The ability to remain calm and organised during busy periods
Previous supervisory experience will be highly regarded, but it isn’t essential. We’re also interested in hearing from experienced technicians who naturally help organise the work around them and are ready for more responsibility.
Experience with agricultural machinery would be an advantage. However, applicants with suitable heavy vehicle, construction or mining equipment experience are also encouraged to apply.
What Kenway & Clark offers
-
Competitive and negotiable pay
- A fully maintained service vehicle for field duties
-
Tool allowance, uniforms and PPE
-
Funded Case IH and Case Construction technical training
-
A mix of workshop, field service and coordination responsibilities
-
Support from the wider Kenway & Clark branch and technical network
-
The opportunity to influence the performance and direction of the workshop
-
Long-term employment with an established regional dealership
Agricultural service work is seasonal, and additional hours or weekend work may occasionally be required during peak periods. Overtime is paid.
